As seen in the table, in all denominations except the 9 kr., we distinguish two types (I or III) according to the engraving. In the 9 kr. denomination, we find three types: In type one, from the first engraving, the numeral 9* is much lower than the ensuing letters. Yet, the top of the 9* is still significantly higher than the K* that follows, contrary to what SCOTT says. In type II, also from the first engraving, the numeral and the word KREUZER* are at the same level. Type II, in which numeral and word are also at the same level, is of the second engraving.
How to Identify the Types:
Here is a simplified classification, based on modifying that of MICHEL:
AUSTRIA (KREUZER denomination):
1 kr. If visible, the two types of engraving can be distinguished. In type 1,the
numeral 1* may be connected to the border.
2 kr. type I: First engraving, numeral 2* connected to border at the top (fig. 2)
type III: Re-engraved, numeral 2* is not connected to the border
3 kr. type I: First engraving, numeral 3* connected to the border at the upper left
(fig. 2).
type III: Re-engraved, numeral 3* is not connected to the border
6 kr. type I: First engraving, numeral 6* connected to border at the top (fig. 2).
type III: Re-engraved, numeral 6* is not connected to the border.
9 kr. type I: First engraving, numeral 9* is lower than KREUZER*.
type II: First engraving, 9* and KREUZER* at the same level.
type III: Re-engraved, 9* and KREUZER* at the same level.
We find many other variations in the lettering, such as missing or deformed serifs and connections between letters that, to my knowledge, are not useful in separating the types of the Kreuzer stamps for Austria.
