A message from Andy Taylor
in reference to the Austrian Philatelic Society Newsletter: Special Issue 3a/2006
This was originally sent by email because of the time constraints. The details below will be repeated in the next paper newsletter issue, but people may not get and read it in time!
WANTED! Our colleagues in Philatelistenklub Merkur Innsbruck are revising their handbook on "Werbestempel of the Tirol" and invite your co-operation. "Werbestempel" are advertising cancellations, used for a medium or long period to promote a location, theme or lifestyle - you
will have seen them on holiday postcards. They are different from "Sonderstempel" = Special Cancellations, used on one or a few days in conjunction with some event such as WIPA.
Some examples can be found at the following links listed here. (Ignore the heading "Ortswerbestempel" which is wrong.)

Basically you'd need to make a list of what you have, perhaps covering 1950 to 1980, with descriptions and date-of-use. An illustration would help, and if it turns out that your cancel is unknown to them an illustration would be essential! They are particularly interested in Werbestempel in the period (1964-66) just before postcodes were introduced; and in variant-examples with reversed date- or picture-part, bits upside down or missing and so forth.
If you want to help, please get in touch with Dr Hans Moser, either via Andy Taylor by e-mail at andy@kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk, or directly (in English) at hans.moser@uibk.ac.at. Now would not be too soon!
