AUSPS Meeting at BALPEX - 2008
The AUSPS will hold its 2nd Annual Society meeting at BALPEX, MD on Saturday, August 30, 2008. It will be sort of an informal meeting at a shared area with the Society for Czechoslovak Philately. BALPEX will run from August 29-31, 2008 at the Marriott's Hunt Vally Inn, MD. Times and admission information can be found at their website, http://www.balpex.org/balpex.html. A reminder, membership dues are now due and are still at the same level as last year. If you haven't done so, please send a check to the treasurer, Albert Hanson today. You'll be glad you did when you enjoy all the benefits of membership, especially the auction twice a year, one of which is about to open. Look for information on Auction #12 throughout the website.

Our Secretary-Treasurer has delved into the archives and has found several articles from the original Austria Philatelic Society of New York. The one featured presently is on 'Rocket Mail' and was written over 45 years ago, but still provides us with interesting information.
We have an in depth article translated from Die Briefmarke by member George Brunn. This is about Austria's 1867 issue. Next you have been provided an index of the Austria Philatelic Society journal. This should provide those looking for information from the past to find it quickly.

Austria's Personal Stamps is a report by member Joyce Boyer. A number of countries, including Great Britain, have produced some form of label attached to the normal postage stamp to make them 'personal' to the user but the label has no significance. Rizza has provided us with the following: Austria's loss of national independence to Germany in March 1938 also meant the loss of its identity; it was renamed the Ostmark, or the Eastern Province.
